Want to Get Involved?

We warmly invite you to participate in any way that feels right for you. Whether you have a little time or a lot, whether you prefer behind-the-scenes support or active advocacy, your contributions matter. Many hands make for light work and many voices become loud! Read about our advocacy below and fill out our interest form if you’d like to join us!

Local Advocacy

In our communities, OR Unplugged supports local parent groups championing change in school and beyond.

We emphasize support for -

  • Phone-free schools from bell-to-bell (K–12): All students must stow away their phones in an inaccessible and secure location from the start of the school day until dismissal. Having phones out of sight and inaccessible to students allows for heightened focus in the classroom and in their face-to-face social sphere.

  • Collective action to delay devices: there is power in numbers! Working together, we can commit to community-wide pledges to delay smartphone use until at least the beginning of high school.

  • Accountable and responsible educational technology: Require thorough vetting of all digital tools and online platforms used in schools to ensure they are safe, effective, and compliant with privacy and data protection laws.

Statewide Advocacy

At the state level, OR Unplugged supports policies and legislation that address screens (and the things on them) both within our schools and in our larger world.

We emphasize support for -

  • Phone-free schools from bell-to-bell: Codified statewide standards to support and expand bell-to-bell phone-free policies across schools (K-12).

  • Educational technology oversight: Regulations for the digital tools in our schools that evaluate for safety, effectiveness, and data privacy.

  • AI regulation: Policies to ensure transparent use of artificial intelligence in educational and child-facing settings.

  • Social media guardrails and warning labels: Age verification, accurate warning labels, and transparency guidelines.

  • Kids’ online safety: Stronger protections for children’s data, age-appropriate design standards, and accountability measures for platforms and app stores.
